This afternoon I had the chance to do a photoshoot of a really cute family at Wheeler Farm. It was so much fun!

This little girl is a beautiful little princess.

This handsome dude is a model. He knows how and when to smile and pose. it just comes naturally!

Baptism Photo Session

Sorry I have been so busy lately. I now have time to do more photo sessions. Here is the first one I have done in a while.

This picture is SOOC (straight out of camera). I was pretty excited that I didn't need to do any post-editing of this picture. This was a pretty important picture as it was going to go on a baptism invitation.

Here is the baptism invitation that I created too. The name and address has been removed for privacy.

LDS Church - Temple Pictures

Black & White Scenery Contest at "Iheartfaces"

This week they have a contest for black & white scenery, but it must have a face in it (even if it is the back of a head). Here is the one I chose. This is the beach at the Grand Wailea in Maui.

Polaroid Art - Photo Maniputlations

Several years ago I was introduced to the art form of Polaroid manipulations. I took the following pictures with an old Polaroid SX-70 camera. Once the picture comes out of the camera, a tool is used to rub the emulsion around which crates a "painterly" effect.

Which one do you like the best?

These really are Polaroid pictures and not paintings. Unfortunately this has become a lost art since Polaroid has discontinued the film for the SX-70.

My favorite one is the last one.

I had a little fun tonight taking some pictures of the rainbow. It was a double rainbow AND we could see both sides of them.

Several weeks ago I took a picture of some lightning. It was pretty far away, so that is why it is a bit grainy.

N.E.M. Family Photo Shoot - Wheeler Farm - Utah Photographer

Tonight I was supposed to do a photo shoot at the Sugar Factory in West Jordan. When I arrived, I was unpleasantly surprised to see locks, chains and "No Trespassing" signs. When the family arrived we discussed the dilemma and they suggested going to Wheeler Farm. So we headed to Wheeler Farm to have some fun on the farm.

I love the casual feeling of this photo. You sure can see the love this family has for each other.

Mom & Dad asked if they could get some pictures with just the two of them. They look so happy together. I asked them to kiss each other and had a lot of fun teasing them when they were kissing. That proved to be a good thing. I have a lot of cute pictures of them talking, laughing and kissing.

I think this cute little girl has a future in modeling! "Strike a pose, there's nothing to it!"

Now doesn't this cute little girl warm your heart. I actually have several cute pictures like this where she is laughing. She was ready and willing to smile at a moment's notice (or a moment's tickle).

Hana Panorama

Along the road to Hana there were lots of places to stop and take pictures of the beautiful scenery.

I love this panorama. It has such great color and it shows a great little secluded Maui town.

Maui Sights

I informed my wife before our Maui trip that I would be an annoying photographer. I asked my family to be patient with me as I frequently stopped to take pictures. Now that I look back, I should have put a big yellow sticker on my back that says "MAKES FREQUENT STOPS!" They were very patient and understanding.

One of the days we hung out at the Grand Wilea Beach. It was a beautiful beach with groomed sand (who would have thought they groomed the beaches). This picture originally had a helecopter in the top left-hand corner. Adam Sandler was filming a movie and I snapped a picture of it on one of the passes. When I got home and looked at this picture, I thought it was postcard perfect... except for the helecopter. Fortunately it came out easily.

I thought I would try my hand at some Diptych pictures. A Diptych is two pictures which are not actually connected, but belong together (or look good together). I happen to like this presentation style. It is kind of like a "2 for 1 deal" on pictures.

For some reason, I can't get the one above to load in 600, so sorry it is smaller.

This next set is an attempt at Tilt-shift or in other words, making it look like a mineature or "tiny town".

I love how this one looks like a toy fire truck.

This is the famous "Road to Hana". What a beautiful view.

Maui Sunsets- SOOC

Here are a few sunset pictures SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera). Sorry I don't have time to post-process right now. Basically I sat on this beach for 1 1/2 hours changing my settings and snapping away to get these. It was quite fun.

Here is one that I touched up just a bit (below).

Notice how the reflection has created a star effect on the silhouettes. I love it!

Adobe Photoshop CS4 = SWEET!

I just picked up Adobe Photoshop CS4 today! I love it. I have a lot of learning to do (since I had CS2). There are a lot of AwEsOmE new features. The B&W editor is really cool. For some reason, my previous version never had the RAW editor. Now I do and I love it.

The only problem is that I had dozens of actions in CS2 and I need to figure out how to convert them or just creat new ones. I am sure my worflow will be different for a while until I get used to this new program.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that!

The reason why I have not posted much lately is because I am in tax season. It doesn't leave a lot of time to have fun with the family or to do photography. After April 15th I will have more time to do all that.

On that note, I wanted to let you know that if you need help preparing your taxes, basic 1040 preparations start at $165, partnerships and corporations start at $200 if the financials are in order.

Please let me know if you are interested. I would love to help. We have the ability to do everything electronically. I have clients on a dailiy basis that scan and e-mail me their documents and I prepare their return and file it electronically and their refunds are direct deposited. No paper or meetings invovled. The money goes right in their accounts! Pretty sweet.

Oquirrh Mountain Temple

Each morning, I have the opportunity to drive by the Oquirrh Mountain Temple in South Jordan. Since it is dark when I leave, I get to see this building with the lights on as the sun comes up. One morning I decided to bring my camera and tripod and sit and wait for some great shots.

And, here they are...

Each one of these is a differnt shot. They are not the same shot processed differently.

This one (above) has a Lomo effect applied to it. I love how it brings out the blue sky.

I thought this one would look cool with some textures applied to it to make it look old.

Finally, this one was actually 3 pictures merged for an HDR effect. I love how it brings out lots of highlights and colors that the normal shot doesn't show. That is exactly why they call it "High Dynamic Range".

HDR, Tilt-Shift and Family Blog is Locked

Just for fun, I had some time last night to play with some of my pictures in Photoshop. Here is a picture I took while in Seattle:

It is taken from the Space Needle. I applied a "Tilt-Shift" technique to it so that it looks like a model city. Pretty cool huh?

I really like this one. I took this on a hike up a canyon.

Last year, I had the opportunity to go to Chicago. We had many opportunities to ride the trains while we were there. One night, I had my camera and I shot a whole bunch of pictures on the trains and waiting for trains.

I thought this one turned out pretty cool. Looks like a station on my little model train set. It isn't. It is a real train station.

This is my family's cabin. Pretty cool isn't it? We visit it every once in a while. It needs a little work, but there are lots of memories here!

OK, one last Photoshopped picture:

It is the Salt Lake Temple. I applied some HDR effects to this one and did some tone mapping.

HDR - High Dynamic Range Photos

Today I decided to try my hand at some HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos. I think HDR can bring out some VERY interesting effects on some picutres. For those of you who don't know, HDR basically involves taking three pictures of the same scene (on a tripod without moving the camera) and changing the exposire. I use AEB +/-2 and then combined the pictures. There was also some tone adjustment done on these pictures.

I took this picture this morning as the sun was coming up.

This is a picture of my living room. The effects make the pictures look a little surreal.

I would love to hear your comments about these pictures and the HDR style of post processing.

A.K. Photo Shoot - Daybreak, Snow, Kids, San Gelato Cafe

I had a fun photoshoot at Daybreak yesterday. First, I would like to give special thanks to San Gelato Cafe for allowing me to use their beautiful fireplace and leather chairs. They don't want this to become a destination for photographers, but I was given special permission for this photo shoot. You really have to visit them and try their delicious gelatos. I had mint chocolate chip and it was awesome!

San Gelatos Cafe really has some very warm and inviting architecture and interior designs, not to mention the good food.

Now on to the photo shoot...

These two cuties are only 11 months apart. At first glance they almost look like twins. I have to admit, that I am partial to the red hair too! I love how they are holding hands.

What a cute smile! After we finished at San Gelatos Cafe, we headed over to Daybreak Lake to get some fun snow pictures. The little guy had a lot of fun throwing snow balls at his mom!

Well, after lots of hard work trying to decide which pictures to professionally edit, here are a few more. There were so many cute, fun and nice pictures, it was hard to choose. I won't give much commentary, so here they are:

I will say that I wanted to experiment with this picture and make it look old fashioned. I took some pictures of cracked concrete and superimposed it over this picture and did some other editing techniques. The "Before" is below:

J.A.G. - Next Batch - Sugar Factory Family Photo Shoot

Here is the second batch of the J.A.G. family photo shoot from yesterday at the Sugar Factory.

I decided to start this entry off with a cute picture of this fun loving couple. Can't you tell they are in love. I wanted to see what it would look like in several differnt formats (Sepia, Colorized, Lomo, etc.). They all look pretty good. Which one do you like? Let me know by leaving a comment.

Can you say "Fly like an eagle". I couldn't believe what a perfect shot this turned out to be. His arms are stretched out just like he is in mid flight! So much fun.

This family is going to move out of the country soon, so they wanted to make some fun memories with Grandma and Grandpa. Can you see the love in their eyes? Can you see that they will miss this cute family?

J.A.G. Photo Shoot - Sugar Factory - Teaser

Today I took met the J.A.G. family at the Sugar Factory. This is such a fun place to do a photo shoot, AND this family is such a fun family to take pictures of. They love to play with their cute little kids. This is the second photo shoot I have done with this family.

You may remember this little angel from their last photo shoot. She is so easy to photograph. All of the pictures turn out great.

This little guy is an entertainer. He and his daddy went to watch a fight last night and today he wants to practice his swing. This series made a fun story board.

Baby D - Photo Shoot - Babies, Newborn

I haven't done a photo shoot with a newborn in quite a while. This one was a handsome little dude that was perfectly mannered. He was an angel.

Don't you just love how peaceful he looks?

As I was trying to get him to smile, his mom said he hasn't really ever smiled before. WOW! This might be proof of his very first smile! I love the gleam in his eyes.

I love it when I can capture those special, unexpected moments. I also decided to make this one look like the "Seventies" with the color and the rounded edges.

Photoshop Tutorial - Textures

Well, I decided to apply some texture to one of my earlier photographs. This is a beautiful flower I found growing in my neighbor's front yard.

It really is amazing with it's own beauty and color. I also love the bokeh in the background (especially the red bokeh).

After applying some textures and changing the hue/saturation and burning the edges a bit by hand, this is what I got...

This was my second photo shoot at Wheeler Farm today. It was TONS of fun AND beautiful! I could take pictures there all day long. If any of you want me to take your pictures there while the leaves are changing, let me know.

What a cute family if I do say so myself!

Every single picture I took of this guy turned out awesome. He is quite photogenic.

Ironically, this picture was at the very end and the kids were playing on a saddle and I snapped pictures of them as they were playing. This is why I love doing lifestyle photography. You just get those random pictures that turn out so wonderful.

I had my first opportunity to do a photo shoot at Wheeler Farm today. It was incredibly beautiful. I couldn't believe it. There were lots of people with the same idea. I had to laugh that as I went to different spots and had my subjects pose, I noticed that different photographers would follow me around and do the same things as I was doing. Same poses too! I guess that is a complement. It really helps to have nice looking subjects.

I just love the way the fall colors come alive in these pictures. They are so vibrant.

Don't you love those dimples? I hear he gets his way when he flashes that smile.

This guy is a little stud! Look at how G.Q. he is.

Photography Locations - Salt Lake County and Surrounding Counties

Trail up Butterfield Canyon

I was wondering if anyone was interested in sharing ideas about great photography locations in Salt Lake County (or surrounding areas)? I am the type of person who loves to share. I also love it when other people share. As you can see on the right side of my blog (a bit lower) I have labels, which I post EVERY location of EVERY photo shoot. Many times, people have asked me how to get there and I can give them specific directions or addresses(sometimes they are even in the comments section). The thing about locations is (as you photogs know) it is easier to do a photo shoot at a specific location, after you have have done a photo shoot there. If it is your first time at a location, it helps if you can atleast see what someone else has done.

So I have been slowly compiling a list of places I hear about or have used. Here are a few hot spots that I have used and LOVE:

-Murray Park if your clients want flowers, trees, grass, river and bridge. Will be a fun place when the leaves fall and even snow.
-Sugar Factory in West Jordan if your clients want Urban, warehouse, old bricks, etc. Doesn't matter what time of year, if you want warehouse shots.
-Daybreak Lake if you want river, lake, bridge, cat tails,
-Butterfield Canyon if you want trees, flowers, foliage. Excellent for fall leaves and snow.
-Memory Grove if you want flowers, trees, grass, river and bridge. Great place when the leaves fall or with snow.
-Thanksgiving Point has lots to offer, but I think they want you to pay and register.
-Ogden 25th Street
-Pierpont Avenue, downtown Salt Lake City
-Gardner Village

Here are a few locations on my list, but I haven't been to yet:
-Antelope Island
-Echo Resevoir
-Rockport Resevoir
-East Canyon State Park
-Park Meadows Country Club (Park City)

S.M.S. Photo Shoot - Family Pictures, Fall Leaves, Butterfield Canyon

Tonight I did a photo shoot up Butterfield Canyon. If you want some fun fall pictures, you better get up there quickly and early in the evening. The sun sets fast up there. We almost didn't have enough time to take the pictures. I had to turn up my ISO a bit on these because the sun had set. Anyway, they turned out great I think.

I love the way the fall colors pop and surround them. The colors they chose to wear look so great in this setting!

What a cute couple. I also posted a picture of them kissing here on my Flickr account.

After the family pictures were done, we sat and talked, but I kept the camera going. I was able to snap a few fun pictures of the kids.

J.A.G. Photo Shoot - Part II - Murray Park - Babies, Kids, Family Photography, Lifestyle Photography

Here is Part II of the J.A.G. photo shoot yesterday at Murray Park.

This first picture is the one that I previously said was my favorite picture in the previous post. I loved it so much, I decided to make the sample page from this picture. The styles can be seen individually at my Flickr account.

Here is another one of this bright eyed little girl on her white blanket.

After the photo shoot, we were talking as we went to the car and the mom expressed her interest in some of the "Story Boards" I have done in past postings. I didn't specifically take any series pictures with that intent. Fortunately, when I was downloading and editing these pictures, I found two series that would work. The one above, the boy is spinning on the playground equipment, and the one below is the boy throwing the ball. They both turned out quite nice.

This was quite a fun photo shoot, and I especially loved taking pictures of the baby girl. She really is easy to photograph, as well as the whole family.

I had another request to do a photo shoot at the old Sugar Factory. I love the personality of these old buildings. I also love the personality of this cute family.

Don't you just love they eyes on this little guy?

The older brother sure has a smile that can warm anyone up. What a handsome little guy.

Here is a nice picture of the family. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the boys to smile. I need to buy some squeaky toys or other noise makers. I still think the picture turned out good.

I love this picture. This shows all of the different styles I can apply to each picture.

K.M. Photo Shoot - Memory Grove

I had a surprise photo shoot tonight that was lots of fun. This cute family had everyone together, including some new additions, and some from out of town.

The kids had a blast taking their shoes off and playing in the creek.

Needless to say, I had fun watching them and snapping away as they romped and splashed and walked through the water.

This picture was a "Luck" picture. I happened to turn and see this father & son walking away. What a neat picture.

I think this picture should be titled "cute cousins". These gals had a fun time walking barefoot in the grass while holding hands. So cute!

Finally, this little model was amazing. I don't think I took a single picture of her that didn't look great. What an incredible pose. This was completely candid.

I finally had some time to do another photo shoot. This one was fun. I love the eyes on this family. They just glow! Not to mention they are such nice people.

This picture, of their daughter, is un-edited and un-processed. Look how beautiful her eyes are naturally! I love this picture! She is so darling.

I love how this picture makes these guys look like they are up to something. Actually, it is quite innocent. I don't think they could ever do anything wrong.

WOW! I love the eyes on this one too!

Isn't he handsome? I love the flower bokeh in the background too!

Locking your blog photos - Part II

I have my blog locked so you can't right click, but a friend of mine noted that when you click on the picture that is uploaded within Blogger, it takes it to another screen where you can then right click and download the picture. I believe I have fixed this issue. You shouldn't be able to click on the picture in this entry and enlarge it. It should be static.

Here is how I did it. The following is the code I see in the "Edit HTML" side of composing a blog entry.

I added the red to show you what I deleted (don't forget the last little red bit at the end). After you delete that code, go into the preview screen and try clicking on the photos. If you get a message asking you if you really want to navagate away from the page, you did something wrong. If nothing happens, you did it right. Also, if you see some wierd code by your pictures, or your picture didn't show up, you either didn't delete everything you should have, or you deleted too much.

Please try it and let me know what you think and if it works for you.

This is only for use when you are uploading your pictures within Blogger. If you are using "Edit HTML" and pulling code from a site like Flickr, you will need to change the settings within Flickr to not allow downloads. I have done this at my Flickr account.

S.C.H. Photo Shoot - Part II

I hope you enjoyed that little teaser yesterday. This family is so cute. I have to thank Marissa Vargason for this photo shoot. She did a mentoring session with me to help me improve my skills and technique. I felt like she was worth her weight in gold! She taught me so many great things that will help the quality of my pictures go up.

Another thing that I appreciated about Marissa is how generous she was with her information. She told me many of her great locations too. This location in downtown Salt Lake City is a beautiful location for a photo shoot. The fact that it is on the shady side of the buidling is perfect.

Here are some of the fun pictures we got.

I was blown away by this shot. I love how he is grabbing the brim of the hat and looking at the camera.

B.S.M. Family - Sugar Factory Photo Shoot

Here is the next installment of my marathon photo shoot week (don't get me wrong, I love doing the photo shoots, but 4 in one week is a lot for me and my busy schedule). I really love shooting at the Sugar Factory. There are so many different spots to get great shots. Pretty much I can work all the way around the buildings during any time of day (avoiding the really light sides at various times of the day).

Enough talking... Bring on the collection!

I just love this spot. The particle board just brings so much color and personality to any picture. Of course, the cute smiles and brightly colored shirts really add a lot of personality. Look at the smile on the older boy (in the green shirt), he has some cute dimples. I heard stories that the girls love his dimples!

I love the little, partial smile this guy can dish out! He is quite the model. He can strike a pose with ease.

When ever I take a family over to the blue fence, the boys immediately run over and start climbing. They love to climb all over it and explore the nooks & crannys. These two boys are born adventure seekers (much to their mother's dismay). They looked in every hole and crack. I even have some photos (maybe I will post in the future) of the little guy finding a loose brick in the white wall and pulling it out and looking into the building. It was a cute picture. Don't miss the zoom in of those dimples on the last one!

I just love the rust spots on the white washed walls of this building. I also love how these boys are looking at their mother. You can tell they really love her AND love to be WITH her! These guys were so fun to work with. They were always smiling and happy. I am glad I was able to capture those memories for them to keep forever!

These next few photos are the same, except I have changed the style to show the family some of the various styles I can apply to their pictures. If you can imagine it, I can photoshop it. If you want noise, or texture, more color, less color, sun spots, I can do it.

This one is plain black & white.

This one has a more vintage look & feel.

I reached this effect by using the "Pioneer Woman's Action" called "Heartland".

Here is the regular one with out any actions applied to it. Pretty cool! I just love that particle board and the kids bright shirts.

M.A.F. Family - Sugar Factory

Here is a teaser of the fantastic and fun photo shoot I had this morning with this wonderful family (just in case you are wondering, I am using initials in the title instead of names). They were so fun and energetic. As you can see from these pictures, I didn't have any problems getting good photographs! They sure are cute!

We started off by taking some pictures of the kids. This little darling has a smile that can melt Antarctica.

This little guy loves to explore and make his sister laugh by sneezing. It was so funny to watch. He would do some fake sneezes and she would giggle her heart out.

Of course we had to get a few with just mom & dad. They had a lot of fun "striking poses". Then, mom started laying the kisses on dad. That is when it got really fun.

There it is. SWAK!

The thing I love about this casual urban style photography is that when the kids need a change or some entertainment, just do it! Dad had the great idea to give daughter a shoulder ride!

As you can tell from the photographs above, this family loves to be together. They naturally have fun and look happy together.

This picture shows many of the syles I can apply to any picture. This is certainly not all of the styles. If we want to get creative, we could make up any style! Black & White, Sepia, Vignette, Colorized, Seventies, Heartland, Soft & Faded, Loveley & Etherial and many more.

Sugar Factory Photo Shoot

Well, we did it. We finally took some time and went over to the Sugar Factory to take some pictures. There was a lot of preparation before hand. I also didn't know if it was going to happen since we have had some pretty severe rain storms nearly every day for the past 2 weeks straight!

I have to preface this entry with the fact that it was getting late and it was cloudy. Most of these pictures were taken with an ISO of 1600 which makes them a little bit grainy. I would have like to have more crispness, but you do with the light that you have I guess.

With that said, here come the pictures... (Warning - Long blog with lots of pictures)

The kids had a blast climbing all over these old buildings and exploring. They also enjoyed doing different poses. I think this was the most fun we have ever had doing a photo shoot. Hopefully we will be going back on Saturday to do my Sister-in-law and her family (yipee - more fun pictures to post).

The thing I love about the "Urban Style" photography is that candid shots are usually the best. Getting pictures of the kids wandering around, talking, laughing, looking away are always the best. I love it when I get surprised like the one above. I love her laugh. It just radiates from this picture. The other thing that is good about the "Urban Style" is that you are not forcing kids to pose and smile. You know how it goes... "Sit up, smile... not like that... I swear, if you cry one more time... stop hitting..." That is typical with formal studio shots. I know, I was a Lifetouch photographer and had to get kids to laugh while they were crying.

These next two were actually taken by my daughter. We let the kids play with the camera just for fun and she actually took some amazing pictures. I think I might hire her on a regular basis.

This one (above) was really fun. I climbed up on the wall on a ledge and held on to the walls on each side. My wife turned around and looked up and I took advantage of the opportunity to steal some kisses. Fortunately my daughter got a great shot.

Again, another candid shot that just turned out great.

I love my wife's eyes in this one! That is what I usually focus on when I am looking through the viewfinder. Unfortunately, the sun was gone, so you can't really see the "catch light" in her eyes. That really makes it an incredible picture when you can see the "catch light".

I love this corner with the ivy growing and the paint coming off the bricks. It has so much personality. I actually took two pictures to get the heigth & width (up & down) .

This picture shows just how much fun we had. The kids had been climbing up this small stepladder and I grabbed them both and threw them on my shoulders. They were laughing hysterically. It was fun!

The particle board in this picture turned out really cool. We didn't even think anything of it until we got back and reviewed the pictures. Next time I do a photo shoot at the Sugar Factory I will be sure to get more here. I love the contrast.

My wife wanted to get some with me in the picture. This is obviously one that she took. I love how the texture on the metal walls has so much contrast. The composition of this is pretty incredible.

Here are the steps I mentioned earlier. They were actually tipped over and partially buried. My son & I pulled it out of the dirt and put it up against the wall. I will be sure to use it each time I take pictures here. This is another picture where I took the normal level, and then took a picture above the subject to get more texture (wall) in the picture. There is always so much character in these old buildings.

I'm not sure if this is considered a diptych, a series or a storyboard. Either way, I thought it was so fun to show my daughter skipping down this piece of railway. It was actually her idea to do this.

The one above was pretty random. I was taking pictures of my wife and my kids hopped up on the wall several feet away from her and I decided to adjust my angle to include them. This picture turned out AWESOME! Just to let you know, I have incredible Photoshop skills (sorry to brag). The reason why I mention this is because my wife had a strap from her shirt hanging between her legs onto the concrete. It looked pretty odd and nearly ruined the picture. I decided to save the picture and remove the strap. This same strap haunted about 6 other pictures, but now it is gone! Thank heaven for Photoshop!

Since we were using the 10 second timer on my camera, this shot was really hard to get. I had to take quite a few. My wife and I kept re-positioning everyone so that it looked good. We had to run up to the camera in between each shot.

More pictures where I had to make the strap disappear! Poof! Magic! Gone!

Pierpont Avenue - Salt Lake City

I just found another fantastic spot to do photo sessions. It is Pierpont Avenue in downtown Salt Lake City. There are lots of walls with ivy, and many brightly painted brick walls. There is lots of character and personality.

The previous three pictures show some examples of the beautiful ivy walls. The first two were just on the side of a parking garage. The third one is the side of a building.

Here is an example of some of the fun personality on Pierpont Avenue.

These two pictures were taken under the shade of some beautiful trees (though there wasn't much shade since it was after 8:00 pm). This 50mm lens I have does wonders in low light. I just love it!

There were plenty of other alley ways that had bright green, purple, and turquoise. I will have to do some more photo shoots in the future and show them to you.

Memorial Pictures

I finally had a chance to take a look at some of the pictures I took over Memorial weekend.

This picture turned out really fun with some "post editing".

I applied the same techniques to this photo to make it look old fashion.

I love the detail of the burned marshmellow and the fire with this close up.

Look at the flames jumping in the air in this one. It almost looks 3-D.

Lots of fun effects with the flames and the burning wood.

Old Building

Here are three more pictures from our Moab trip. I saw this building and got really excited. It has so much character and personality.

I love how the wood even looks antique.

When I zoomed out, I saw that I was able to capture the motorcycle crowd hanging around their bikes. This added a different element of personality to the picture, along with the old wooden building next door.

This is a picture of the kids in front of that same old building with the white paint coming off. Look at the interesting glass ornaments hanging in the window. I would also like to point out the beautiful wood grain on the windowsill.

Delicate Arch

Here are some more pictures from my recent Moab trip. These pictures are of Delicate Arch in Arches National Park.

I played around with the camera settings to get this one to have a lot of contrast. It turned out pretty cool. I love how deep red Delicate Arch looks.

While I was snapping tons of pictures of this beautiful natural creation, I wanted to take a few black and white pictures too. This one shows some interesting streaks or markings on the arch that you don't notice at first when it is in color.

The thing that is so difficult to understand if you haven't been to this site is the massive size of this arch and the bowl below. I decided to hike around the side of the arch and down into this bowl. It took several minutes to do that. If you look closely at the ridge line, there are little bumps. Those are people standing on the top ledge. In fact, there are actually people standing under and around the arch too. This truly is a natural wonder. It was amazingly easy to take beautiful pictures of this arch. I recommend that all beginner photographers get some practice at Arches National Park. It is a lot of fun and it will build your confidence.

Bridge to Heaven

The most remarkable thing about the photo above is that the time of day cast this perfect shadow on the bridge. You can see the arches going up and down. It is just amazing.

Ford Tough!

This past weekend we went to Moab, Arches and Dead Horse Point. It was awesome. We borrowed my parent's Ford Explorer. Before we left they told me that Ford was having a contest. If you take a great picture with a Ford in it and they use it in their magazine, you could win $100. I took a few and this was my favorite!

Las Vegas Photo Shoot

Sorry it has taken me so long to post these photos. I have been working long hours.

We took a VERY quick trip to Las Vegas and I had the opportunity to take lots of fun pictures.

I love this casual pose and soft smile.

This one was difficult to get because it was dark outside and I was in a moving car. I am shocked at how well it turned out. I love how there are so many bright colors.

I love the reds and yellows in this picture.

This picture is the surprise picture. If you look closely, you can see multiple reflections. This was on display at a street vendor on Freemont Street. When you look close, you can see several casino lights reflecting on the glass. It makes this more colorful and mysterious!

My wife loves this picture. Don't they have the most awesome smiles. Even their eyes are smiling! These are two handsome models!

The casinos pour millions of dollars into marketing research. The lights, colors, designs, speed of lights, and shapes were all designed with the purpose of drawing your attention and luring you in. That is the symbolism I see in this picture. It is very intruiguing.

This picture is quite a contrast from the previous one. Here is a creation that has taken millions of years to form this beauty. The lights, color and shapes are all very beautiful and luring in a different way.

What a perfect smile.

Here is another decoration that has curious reflections of casino lights in it.

Another beautiful aspect of these ornament picutres is the bokeh. Notice the awesome background blurs that have unique patterns.

I did a little post-editing to this picture and I was blown away. I love the effects.

More practice with the new lense

I don't have a lot of time to practice with my new lense right now, but here are some shots I got the other day.

Sometimes the kids just strike a pose and tell me to take a picture. This one above was like that.

This one was amazing. The light was coming through the window just right so I could get some "catch lights" in her eyes. She had so much fun changing her pose each time I snapped the shutter.

This one also has the wonderful "catch light" but her fingernails are brighter and more colorful. I just love using natural light. Flashes tend to wash out parts of the picture, but if you can take pictures next to a window with lots of light, it is just perfect. Just adjust the aperture and shoot away!

I just couldn't pass this one up. She had her hands and legs crossed perfectly to dislplay her newly painted nails!

I did a little "Lomo" editing on this photo. It turned out pretty good.

Here is the same picture SOOC (Straight out of camera). I think it turned out pretty good. No editing needed (that is why I tried the Lomo editing to change it to a different style).

Overall this was a fun evening of photography. I hope to have more opportunities like this. Unfortunately since I am working long tax season hours, I may not get to many opportunities like this until after April 15th.

My New Lense

After a lot of research, I decided to buy another lense. I chose to buy the Canon 50mm 1.8. It is quite a bit different than my previous lense. First of all, I love how low the f-stops go. It makes it fun to shoot close up portrait pictures.

Nicole went to her stylist today and got a cut and color. She was so excited about it. She asked me to take pictures of her hair from every angle (including the top) so she could remember how it looked today.

Another thing I love about this lense is the detail that shows up in the eyes. I love the "catch light" effect. I can't wait to use it in natural light (as opposed to the kitchen ligts in these pictures).

While Brandon was doing his homework, I snapped a few pictures. The depth of field is incredible with this lense. I focused on his eye and almost everything else is out of focus.

Again, look at the details of his eyes, and notice the "catch lights".

I decided to have a little fun with some inanimate objects. I thought this "retro" picture of the Kitchen Aid mixer was fun. I focused on the "h" in the word. As you can see, almost everything else is out of focus.

Finally, I wanted to se how this lense would do with some colors. It was fun to play around with the settings and see what woluld come out. Like I said, I am so excited to get to try this out this weekend with natural light. Till then!

Another Little Model

Makenna sure is a wonderful willing model. The camera comes out and she instantly strikes a cute pose.

I didn't even have to position her hands or her head. I think she watches a lot of princess movies and practices regularly. I really love how her eye color draws you in. I used several actions from Pioneer Woman's arsenal to get the background to fade like that.

Derek & Karen's Wedding - Valentines Day!

Congratulations to Derek & Karen Rowe! They were married today! Valentines Day! Here are a few of my favorite shots from the day.

As we were all following them up the snowy and wet stairway on the outside of the Bountiful Temple, I happened to notice that Karen had on beautiful Cinderella shoes. As she and Derek were trying to keep her dress from getting wet and dirty, the shoes kept peeking out and I quickly snapped this candid shot. A lucky shot.

I have to laugh at this picture because it is actually over-exposed. When I saw it at home, I thought... "I need to put a white vignette on this one to make it look more like Heaven.

When I pull my camera out, my sweet daughter says "take a picture of me daddy". Well, here it is... My little princess!

I am grateful that my kids are so willing to just stop and pose for me whenever I say "stop". It was quite a snowy day and the trees and bushes had lots of white fluf on them which makes for a beautiful, natural backdrop.

Well, it has been a while since I have posted any pictures to this blog. I have been so busy lately. I just decided that it had been long enough. I need to play with my camera whenever I can. I need to practice. So practice I did. Here are several pictures I took tonight. I used a different setting on eachone.

I have seen the "ring" pictures when people get married. I decided to do these ring pictures in honor of Valentines day. Happy Valentines Day babe!

These two pictures of my daughter are actually the same one, I just decided to make one a black & white because I thought it was such a cute picture.

I know I am biased, but I think my kids are pretty photogenic. My son just patiently sat there while I snapped pictures.

This last picture is my favorite of the 3 ring pictures. I really got lucky with this one. You wouldn't know it, bu I had to add lot of light to this one and adjust the settings. It was very difficult. I probably took 20 pictures to get t his one!

I was playing with my camera around the christmas tree lights. I decided to do a long exposure and move the camera around in circles. This picture turned out pretty cool.

Ogden 25th Street

We decided yesterday to go up to Ogden's Historic 25th Street to take some fun pictures. We were fortunate to have perfect weather and lighting. The kids were really patient with me as I continuously snapped pictures of them. As you can see, they had fun climbing on things, throwing leaves, and sitting on statues. I would definitely recommend taking family pictures at Ogden's Historic 25th Street. Let me know if you want details.

Thanksgiving Point & Yellow Fork Canyon

These two pictures (above) were taken at the Thanksgiving Point tropical room. The lighting was just perfect for me to get a time delayed waterfall picture. I love how the water splashes into a blur at the bottom.

These three pictures were taken up Yellow Fork Canyon. Most of the leaves have already changed colors, but it is fun to see the little things like the moss and the berries hanging around still to create contrast in a picture.

Also, it was interesting to take the picture of my son, with his green sweater, against the red/brown backdrop of plants that used to be green.

Blue Boys

The other night we drove around the industrial area of West Jordan out by the brick factory. We found several buildings that have metal siding. I had the kids jump out and stand by the wall while I snapped pictures. I think the color contrast turned out the best with these.

Mountain Colors

This picture was taken from the tram on the way up to the top of Snowbird. It really is fun to see the fall colors, with the deep green pine trees and then a skiff of snow on the ground.

I had to walk through the snowy forest to get this picture. The sound of the stream was so peaceful, and it really added to the picture.

Here is a nice B&W picture of my daughter that I used "Surface Blur" on. It really made her skin smooth, even in B&W.

Here is a picture of my nephew that I added noise to. He had such a serious look on his face, I couldn't help but emphasize it by adding the noise.

Here is a fun picture of my son that I edited in Photoshop. I used the "Surface Blur" feature to get his skin to have that soft glow.

Today I took the kids up to Snowbird because they had a special deal for riding the tram. If you bring a canned food, you get a free ride up the tram. We brought some cans and rode the tram up to the very top. It was really cold and the ground was covered with snow. We quickly ran into the warming hut to wait out the remanider of the time until the tram left (20 minutes). On our way out I was snapping pictures of the kids as they were coming down the stairs of the warming hut. When I took this one, I was blown away. I couldn't believe how naturally perfect it was. There is no post-editing of this picture!

Butterfield Canyon & Candy

It is really interesting trying to remember how shutter speed, aperture, and ISO settings all affect how the picture turns out. In the past 24 hours, I have taken literally hundreds of pictures. With each setting, I would change the shutter speed up and down. Then I would change the aperture up and down, and so on. Once I found several pictures that I liked for each setting, I adjusted them in Adobe Photoshop.

The original picture of the candy jar didn't have much (if any purple). I had to bring that color out.

I really love changing the settings in Photoshop to see what fun colors or contrast I can bring out. Please feel free to comment on any of these pictures. I would love to hear what you think, and if there are ways I could improve them.

New dSLR camera

Well, I did it. I took the plunge and bought a new Digital SLR camera. I am pretty excited. It has quite a few awesome features and capabilities. All of the pictures posted here on this blog, and on the family blog have been with a regular point and shoot digital camera.
